Thursday is the day when the U.S. Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Brett Kavanaugh in D.C. will hear from Christine Blasey Ford with her accusations of a sexual assault at a high school party years ago.
This hearing will get maximum TV coverage, from all the news channels, but I don’t know if I want to bother to tune in. It has taken forever for Dr. Ford to even appear at these hearings, for one thing, and a couple of other women have now come forward with their own last-minute claims, with the latest one looking dubious.
Meanwhile, Kavanaugh sat down with Martha MacCallum on Fox News this week to try and clear his name.
Quite frankly, I don’t know what to make of all this. The whole process really looks like a complete fiasco and a total circus atmosphere. I know there are Kavanaugh/Trump supporters calling for a vote to be rushed right through to confirm this nominee and end all this insanity, but I don’t agree with that, either.
Among other things, these GOP senators have their own political futures to worry about. Even if these accusations are a politically-motivated smear campaign or delaying tactic, these senators cannot simply rush ahead without listening to these accusations. They need to be fair, and need to be seen as above the fray.
But this stance is enraging their Republican supporters, who are accusing them of having no backbone. These Republican senators are in an absolute no-win position, no matter what they do.
Anyway, we shall see what transpires Thursday, but this is a gong show regardless of what the end result is. And that is all I want to say about that.
As for Pres. Donald Trump, I understand he had an entertaining press conference today.
Update (Thursday): hearings are on and it is indeed a circus, which should surprise no one. So far it doesn’t look like it’s going very well at all for the Republicans.
Another update: wow, it’s gone beyond a circus now, check out Lindsey Graham. Did he ever lay a smack down on the Democrats today.
