Idris Elba on the cover of GQ, uh, I mean MAXIM. I don’t know what to make of this.

It’s time for another “state of the lads mags” update, and this time it’s about MAXIM.

Now, I have not been a fan of this rag for a long time for all kinds of reasons — mainly because I’ve always thought it was a stupid, lowbrow magazine. But this year in particular, this usually babe-obsessed magazine that is usually filled with starlets and models and its rankings of “hottest” women has really fallen off the cliff, as quite a few people have noticed.

Earlier this year they put Taylor Swift on the cover, which is a sure sign of selling out to commercialism. Now, for the September issue, they’ve ditched the girls completely and put a man on the cover for the first time.

It’s Idris Elba, the man who would be James Bond but likely won’t.

Apparently a lot of people love the Elba cover, though I notice it really seems to be women and the usual political-correct crowd in particular who are expressing this sentiment.

You know, I’m not going to sit here and tell MAXIM how to run their business, because this rag hasn’t been worth reading for a long time anyway. It’s pretty obvious they did this stunt just to get people to talk about it.

But this really does look like a last-gasp move to me. The people in charge there seem bent on completely running away from what MAXIM is all about.

If they want to put Idris Elba on the cover of MAXIM, and advertise “56+ pages of style” on the cover, that’s fine, but don’t call yourself MAXIM magazine. I suggest a more appropriate title: “GQ”.

MAXIM magazine is finished!! That is my lads mag update for this month.
