As far as I can see, there are two ways this Brian Williams Memorygate fiasco (in which he admitted that his claim that his helicopter was hit by enemy fire during his Iraq coverage wasn’t true) could play out during this coming week:
(A) People will realize that memories are not perfect, a plausible explanation emerges for Williams’ confusion, the Twitterati calms down, the scandal blows over, and he goes back to work;
(B) This “internal investigation” NBC News is doing could turn up even more and worse dirt about “exaggerated reporting” and so on, particularly regarding Williams’ famous Hurricane Katrina coverage. Or some other news organization could find dirt of their own.
Williams is currently on a week-long self-imposed hiatus as anchor of the NBC Nightly News. Lester Holt will be filling in for him this week. Honestly, your guess is as good as mine as to whether Williams will be back at all.
