A sure sign I am getting old: it was the end for network TV’s Saturday Morning Cartoons this past weekend

I was stunned to read this on Mark Evanier’s website — Saturday morning cartoons are officially RIP.

The company that supplied the block of cartoons on Vortexx, on the CW, (example of which is above) has been replaced and a new block of educational live action shows will be airing from now on. The cartoons from Vortexx aired for the last time this past weekend.

All in all, this is sad news for animation fans like myself, even though I haven’t watched Saturday morning cartoons for the longest time. In fact most of the programming on the other networks has been of the news and educational variety for years.

If you want cartoons these days, you either turn to cable networks or to FOX on Sunday evenings. This past weekend, in fact, was the big Simpsons-Family Guy crossover episode of Family Guy that everyone had been hyping up. As well, on the same evening, they killed off somebody on The Simpsons. Story about the night here.

That, my friends, is where all the real action is these days when it comes to TV animation, over on FOX on Sunday nights.

As for me, if I want to relive the old days when I would get up early to watch Bugs Bunny, Scooby-Doo and their ilk on Saturdays, I can always tune in to Teletoon Retro — the one and only channel on Canadian TV worth its price, in my view.
